about the author
Wolfgang Regal, (†) born in 1948, lived in Vienna. Fascinated by the observational skills, knowledge and, with the most primitive equipment, precision of the astronomers and navigators of antiquity, he was engaged in historical navigation, surveying and astronomy

Diverse outdoor activities, the often asked question "Where are we?" and passionate "naked eye" stargazing have led to this book. The title "Daumensprung & Jakobsstab - Messen ohne Maßband" (Thumb Jump & Jacob's Staff - Measuring without a Tape Measure) was also published by him at Conrad Stein Verlag.
The author passed away in 2015.

Short description
A small inattention, a misstep and already it happened. The naked life has just been saved, but the entire equipment has literally "gone down the drain". The GPS was no longer usable anyway, the battery had been dead for some time, but the fact that now the compass is also gone is very unpleasant

In the jacket pocket we still find a completely soaked map, but maybe it will still be usable. But otherwise we have nothing left except a pocket knife and a hopefully waterproof watch. We are not in the middle of nowhere, we know that a few kilometers north there is a road that takes us back to civilization, but where is north? Emotionally, we would say this way

But is it true? Now it would be probably good if we had him. Him, that legendary sixth sense. This innate inner compass, which is said to be possessed by the indigenous peoples of Australia, Africa, America and also the Eskimos. This legendary sense of orientation, which enables these so-called "uncivilized" people to precisely indicate the points of the compass at any time, even in the darkest starless night and in fog.
