about the author
Roland Schmellenkamp (born 1967) has a degree in political science and has been a cyclist since childhood. Back then in his home village in Hesse and later as a student, the bicycle was primarily a cheap means of transportation. A cycling vacation in Norway in his early 20s led him to vow: "Never again to go on longer tours by bike!"At the rainiest time of the year in the rainiest area of Europe near the city of Bergen, poor equipment (leaky tent, wobbly rack, uncomfortable bike) and the extreme climbs were reasons for this vow

That looked different almost 20 years later after a long day trip: Since then, Roland Schmellenkamp has been an enthusiastic touring cyclist and enjoys trying out new technology and equipment. He also goes on vacation by bike because he wants to live more environmentally conscious. So far he has cycled thousands of kilometers in Germany, Scotland, England,France, Denmark, Holland, Chile, Argentina, Oman, Namibia, Canada and the USA.

Brief description
Vacation by bike and with camping equipment? Many shake their heads at that, saying "Too strenuous with the heavy luggage!" Roughly speaking, with a bicycle and complete camping equipment, it's about 38 kg that you have to pedal. Those who travel by bike usually have bags attached at the front, on the handlebars, on the side of the luggage rack and on top of that there are more bags. Some even have a trailer

Because the luggage is heavy, the bike has to be very stable - and is therefore also heavy. Gradients become a grind, and the tour becomes an ordeal. But there is another way. Fewer bags, less luggage, less weight - and therefore more fun. Hikers demonstrated this a few years ago: "Trekking ultralight" is the keyword (and the book of the same name by Stefan Dapprich from the Conrad Stein publishing house is highly recommended). The bicycle travelers can imitate it. Under 12 instead of 18 kg for the fully equipped bike are possible, 10 instead of 20 kg for camping equipment including tent, sleeping bag, stove, spare parts and clothing. Those staying in hostels can even get by with 4 kg of luggage.
