about the author
Erik Van de Perre, born 1965, graduated in geology from the Rijksuniversiteit Gent in Belgium in 1988. In the summer of 1993, he toured the volcanic island by bicycle for the first time, "to find out what it's like to live on an island full of ticking time bombs." It was the first of many Iceland trips that would take him to the far corners of the country. Today, he lives in Kiel as a freelance author and photojournalist and prefers to report on volcanic areas and the Scandinavian region. He has already written several hiking guides for Conrad Stein Verlag.
Short description
The five routes presented have established themselves as Iceland's classics. The Laugavegur (53 km), Iceland's best-known trek, leads from the highland oasis of Landmannalaugar through colorful rhyolite mountains and barren sand and lava deserts in four daily stages to Þórsmörk. Deep gorges, gushing waterfalls and glittering ice tongues characterize the challenging mountain hike over the Fimmvörðuháls (25 km, 1 to 2 days)
The Kjalvegur (48 km, 3 to 4 days), an easy tour for beginners, winds through the western highlands at the foot of the Langjökull ice cap. Huge mesas and shield volcanoes accompany the hiker on Öskjuvegur (97 km), which opens up the vast East Icelandic lava wilderness of Ódáðahraun. Crossing the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park (33 km, 2 days), the focus is on the proximity to a gigantic gorge with spectacular waterfalls. All routes are excellently marked and, with the exception of the last one, equipped with hikers' cabins.
