More space and privacy with your own caravan awning!

The caravan awning brings comfort

A caravan awning is a must for most caravan campers on holiday. The otherwise sometimes limited living space can be easily extended and the additional space can be used as required. Many campers use their caravan awnings for cooking, eating and as an anteroom for camping furniture, for parking their bikes or as a sheltered spot to eat outside with the family, regardless of the weather. Caravan awnings are also a popular place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the campsite: close the curtains and door and relax.

Awnings and their special advantages:

  • Inflatable awnings
  • Awnings with removable front walls
  • Awnings with veranda effect
  • Awnings with permanent and gable top ventilation
  • Freestanding permanent awnings
  • and much more

Awnings suitable for your caravan

Awnings are available for every caravan, regardless of age and model. The decisive factor here is what is known as the circumference. This value describes the lateral circumference of the caravan, i.e. the length measured from the ground over the side and roof edge to the other side of the ground. The caravan awning is attached to the so-called piping strip, a groove that serves to hold the tent fastening (piping on the awning). If the caravan is a newer model, the circumferential dimension for the appropriate caravan awning can be taken from the enclosed documents, but the most reliable way is always to measure it yourself.

If these are not available, you can try to determine the overall dimensions on the caravan manufacturer's website. Otherwise you will have to measure it yourself. Awning sizes are often given in tent manufacturer catalogues, but our customers often experience unpleasant surprises as these are often not accurate enough. Therefore, once again: Please measure your own dimensions!

Caravan awnings for every area of use

Different caravan awnings are used depending on the type of camping. A distinction is made between

  • Travelling awning
  • Seasonal awning
  • Year-round awning
  • Winter awning

A distinction can be made between full awnings and partial awnings. A full awning encloses the entire length and height of the caravan, right down to the floor. A partial awning, on the other hand, is only attached to part of the roof edge. To attach it, the piping of the caravan awning is pushed into the strip provided.

Travelling awnings - small pack size, lots of freedom when travelling

The travelling awning, also known as a summer awning, is the perfect companion for many campers. After all, those who like to go on holiday several times a year for short periods of time often need a lightweight awning with a small pack size that can be set up and taken down quickly. The lightweight fabric of travelling awnings is typically coated on one side with water-repellent materials such as PVC, acrylic or PU. This common combination for caravan awnings protects against rain, but also allows condensation to pass through. To save weight and space, the tent is supported by a lightweight, purpose-built construction made of aluminium tubes.

Ultimately, it is the personal requirements of the camper that determine which model is best for them. For example, a couple with a large caravan will tend to favour a smaller partial tent. This caravan awning alone is easier to pitch and the space should be sufficient for 2 people even with camping furniture. The Berger Garda L Deluxe awning would be a suitable caravan awning for the two of them. The partial tent is inflatable and therefore quick and easy to erect, without any poles.

If a family with 3 children has to decide between several caravan awnings, the choice will probably fall on a spacious full tent with a high tent depth, despite the higher weight and more complex set-up. In this case, the Sirmione III touring awning from Berger's own brand would be a suitable purchase candidate, as this caravan awning combines the desire for space with a small pack size.

Awnings for seasonal or year-round camping

Completely different requirements are placed on the material and stability if the caravan awning is to be left outside for the camping season or the whole year. In this case, the weight and pack size take a back seat, as other factors take priority, especially as the awning is only erected and dismantled once a year.fixed awnings are generally caravan awnings that are attached to a caravan over a longer period of time. These include winter awnings and all-season awnings. These awnings are characterised by their solid workmanship, as they have to withstand a lot of wind and rain over a long period of time. Compared to permanent awnings made of aluminium, a fixed awning made of polyester and PVC is relatively inexpensive.

A highly waterproof outer skin is essential for a seasonal or year-round awning. For this reason, fixed awnings for caravans are almost always double-sided with a PVC coating. This is absolutely waterproof and rot-proof, but also less permeable to air. It is essential to ensure that the tent is well ventilated to prevent condensation and moisture damage to the fabric. Soiling or stains can also be easily wiped off the tent skin. The PVC coating on the caravan awning is also very resistant to cold and weather changes.

High-quality all-season awnings also have window flaps, a fully closable high ventilation system and a surrounding canopy.

Steel is usually used for the poles of all-season awnings, as the metal is more stable and heavier than aluminium. The diameter of the tubes is usually larger and the thickness of the steel tube is designed for the heavier weight of the tent canvas. In addition, the attachment of hurricane and ridge poles is recommended for longer stays in order to guarantee maximum stability. DWT offers a top-class model for this area with the Carat all-season awning.

Through the camping year with a winter awning

Fritz Berger offers a winter awning for your caravan for the cold season. This time of year poses particular challenges for caravan awnings. The freezing cold and snow put a lot of strain on the tent material and poles. Winter awnings are designed precisely for these loads and are usually used with additional reinforcing poles. As a partial awning, caravan awnings of this type have a smaller, sloping pent roof so that snow can slide off. Campers mainly use the winter-proof awning as a heat and dirt trap for the caravan. However, it is also suitable for storing utensils such as ski boots or for cooking.
