When and Why Should Tents Be Cleaned and Waterproofed?
Camping tents are usually pre-treated with a waterproofing agent by the manufacturer, allowing you to start your camping adventure right after purchase. However, with regular use and exposure to elements like sunlight and rain, the protective waterproof layer can degrade. If you don't clean and waterproof your trekking tent regularly, it may lose its effectiveness and, in the worst case, allow water to seep through.
You should clean and waterproof your tent when you notice that water no longer beads up on the surface. To avoid unpleasant surprises on your next trip, it's a good idea to check the waterproofing before heading out. A simple test is to spray the tent with a garden hose and check if the water rolls off the fabric. If the fabric absorbs water instead, it’s time to clean and reapply waterproofing treatment. Typically, tent waterproofing should be done every two to three years.

How Do You Waterproof a Tent?
There are a few ways to waterproof a tent, depending on the material. For synthetic fabrics like polyester, a waterproofing spray is ideal. The process is simple:
- Thoroughly clean the tent and ensure it is completely dry.
- Spray the waterproofing spray evenly on the fabric outdoors.
- Let the waterproofing spray dry for several hours. Done!
For cotton tents, use a liquid waterproofing agent to maintain the fabric's breathability. The process is as follows:
- Dilute the recommended amount of waterproofing agent with water.
- Apply the mixture to the tent using a sponge or brush.
- Let the waterproofing agent dry. Done!
Regardless of the fabric, always follow the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning and waterproofing your awning.
